tidy mind, tidy stitches. (2KCBWDAY3)

Day Three: 30th March. Tidy mind, tidy stitches.
How do you keep your yarn wrangling organised? It seems like an easy to answer question at first, but in fact organisation exists on many levels. Maybe you are truly not organised at all, in which case I am personally daring you to try and photograph your stash in whatever locations you can find the individual skeins.
another question that is difficult for me to answer. back in germany my stash was not organised in any way, it was a big mess in bags in a cupboard. but now i started organising the small amount of yarn that i have here in israel. i just divided it into materials. that's all...
this is the place where i keep my needles and other equipment.
when i get my wool from germany i will have to think of a new system and a new place to store my wool...

i am very curious about all the other posts on this topic and hope to get some inspiration =)

skill + 1up (2KCBWDAY2)

hmm, what have i learned over the last year? in crafty things not a lot. i spend most of the last year traveling in
(read some blog posts by clicking the countrys names) and i did not always take my knitting needles with me.

but i learned some things.... how to crochet flowers,
i designed my first own pattern (you can buy it here),
how to make stuffed animals
and how to knit cables (here is the pattern for kate. but i changed it a bit...)

a tale of two yarns (2KCBWDAY1)

so, finally! the first day of the 2nd annual knitting and crochet blog week has arrived! as i did not want to ruin the surprise i just now read the topic for the first day: a tale of two yarns.

hmm... it gets difficult for me here as we just moved to our new house and all my yarns are still in germany.  the only yarns i have here are leftovers from r.'s mothers stash (mostly acrylic) and some very simple 100% wool yarns for my rabbits. but i can tell you about a yarn i bought at the tutto opal shop while my mum and i were at the international sock knitter festival 2008 in hechingen, germany. it was great!
this is me holding some of the yarn we bought
(very happy as you can see =))
and this is one of my favorite yarns that we got therein . it is a mix of silk and wool and i transformed it into a dressing gown by jeannie atkinson (during my a-levels). i almost knitted the whole project in classrooms during lessons. in the beginning the teachers where rather sceptical but as most of the project was a very easy pattern, so i could still pay attention to the teacher. after some lessons it did not bother them anymore =)
this is as far as i got with the dressing gown (i did not have enough wool to crochet around the borders... maybe i will finish it some day). the yarn is very soft but heavy and i really like how it feels like on the skin.

(you have to excuse the bad quality of these photos but they were made in 2008 and with bad cameras.)

talking about that event:
another yarn i got there was stunningly beautiful as a yarn...
and...lets say less beautiful knitted....

my weeks small adventure!

today when i got to the ulpan michal, our teacher told us that we are going to sing with all the other ulpan students. we went down (our classroom is on the third floor) to the big hall, got the lyrics and started to sing (in hebrew!!).
it was nice and weird at the same time. we sang songs like hava nagila, hine ma tov and some pesach songs (echad mi yiodea?). you get to know the lyrics very quickly (even if you don't understand it) with the rhythm and the melody. it makes it much easier. did you ever try singing songs in a language you didn't know or just started learning?

now it is your turn!

  • post your weeks small adventure on your blog/flickr/etc...

fog and swell

i am following her for little while now and i get more and more impressed by her creations.
somehow she is able to grab the essence of a whale and bring it to life in her wonderful hand stiched cloth animals!
i stole some of her photos (i hope she does not mind) to show you some of her work (she also has some un-whaley works that are amazingly beautiful =))
so make sure you visit fog and swell
and her etsy shop

this saturday we had some of r.'s friends coming over for lunch and he made his unbelivebly tasty meatballs with potatoes, sweet potatoes, eggplant, broccoli and mushrooms! i took this picture while he was rolling them to put them into the tomato sauce. maybe i will be able to draw the recipe out of him. as i pretty much suck in cooking, he is responsible for food most of the time (and he is really good at it =)).
may you all have a peaceful and sunny saturday!

tchina cookies

i made some tchina cookies the day before yesterday but did not find the time to post the recipe. so here it is =)

  • 200g butter
  • 3/4 cup/glass of sugar
  • small bag of vanilla sugar
  • 3 cups/glasses flour

  • heat your oven to 180 deg.
  • mix everything together until you get a big oily ball of dough that does not stick to your fingers.
  • create small balls from the dough and put it in the oven.
  • look very carefully at the oven and don't let them get too brownish...
  • when you take the cookies out of the oven don't try to eat one! you’ll burn your tongue and they will crumble! wait untill the cookies are cooler.

bomb in jerusalem!

just a quick update:
it seems like one person was killed and about 30 were injured as a bomb exploded in front of the central bus station in jerusalem.

to keep you informed...

the hamas is still shooting missiles into the south of israel and the israeli airforce started an air strike some days ago. i am not going to juge and i will give you different articles to inform yourself and to get the picture from many different views.

here is an article from haaretz
and another one from haaretz from the 20.3.
here two (22.3 and another one from the same day) from al jazeera
here one from bbc
here is a video from news (the report on the gaza incidents are in the end of the video)
and here an article  from the jerusalem post

(no beautiful photos here, cause there is nothing beautiful about it...)

some weeks ago there was an crime in one of the settlements in the west bank that shocked israel and the rest of the world. on friday a whole family (mother, father, an 11 year old, a 3 year old and a one month old baby) was stabbed while they were sleeping! the murderer is suspected a terrorist and hunted by israeli police.
friday evening is shabbat what gives everything a symbolic touch...
abbas, the palestinian president called it "despicable, immoral and inhuman" and the turkey fm denounced it as an "act of terror".

so there is a lot of bad stuff going on here....
saty peaceful and spread love (wherever you are!)

my weeks small adventure!

as i wrote in an earlier post i got a sewing machine some days ago and today i started experimenting with leftover cloth that i got from luli. i had no idea with what to start because the last time i sewed proper things was in school, when i learned how to use a sewing machine... then i remembered that my mum made me a lot of small bags to store all the stuff i carry around and started thinking of designs for something similar.
but as i tried things and made a lot of mistakes (i almost ripped everything apart because it was so frustrating!) i ended up making a small handbag (it is still in process). but i really enjoyed working with all the different materials and shapes.

now it is your turn!
  • post your weeks small adventure on your blog/flickr/etc...

fool on the hill (by matt ruff)

Fool on the Hill: A Novel
some months ago i borrowed this book from a friend and was unable to put it down. in my eyes  Fool on the Hill: A Novel  is a very weird and unique book and i loved it! (i even gave it to r. as a christmas present).

imagine you have a bunch of different yarns and you start knitting. in the beginning you have many different ends but slowly, one after another, all the different strings will connect, become one without melting into each other.

that seems to be a good way to describe this book. you start with a group of strange and fascinating people at a university, a cat and a dog looking for heaven, a writer who has problems with his muse and some fairies all ending up in a modern fairy tale about love and magic, a greek original and good and evil.

even if it sounds like it belongs to the genre of fantasy i don't really agree putting it there. it seems to be somewhere in the middle. so give it a try, even if you don't like fantasy!
